Annual Membership Meeting

March 22, 2009
2:00 pmto4:00 pm

The River Road Neighborhood Association’s annual membership meeting will be held Sunday, March 22nd, at 2 p.m. in Lion’s Field Clubhouse on Broadway, just south of Mulberry. Your board of directors, at its January 15 meeting, set that March date as required by the bylaws.

Directors also named a nominating committee to find candidates to replace the two outgoing board members who will have completed their three-year terms. Committee members are Mimi Quintanilla, Bill Sibley and Nell Fenner Grover (me).

Rotating off the board are Larry DeMartino and me. I told the board I would volunteer to continue on the communications committee as your email communicator. (Committee members do not have to be members of the board.)

PLEASE NOTE: Annual dues per household will be $10.00 instead of $5.00. That increase was approved by the membership at last year’s annual meeting, to be effective at this year’s annual meeting.

Nell Fenner Grover, communications chair.

River Road Community Garden

IT’S OFFICIAL. The River Road Neighborhood Association is going to have a Community Garden! Our request for funds from the Green Spaces Alliance (formerly the Bexar Land Trust) yielded a grant in the amount of $8,000 for help in the construction of our garden. We are very thankful to them for consideration of our request.

The selection committee at Green Spaces Alliance particularly like the fact that we are working together with our Parks Department to utilize the park land at the corner of Huisache and Allison, a small triangle of land across the street from the remainder of the park (just south of where the stables used to be). This site borders on the Spanish colonial Upper Labour Acequia, which ran through the park and on down what is now Dewberry, and was used for irrigation of crops.

The Parks Department has helped us already, by removing some of the asphalt and gravel that had been left on the site for years. We will have a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with Parks, allowing us to develop our garden there. We plan to build a fenced area for our vegetables, fruits and a native plants nursery. Nursery plants will be available for transplanting to homes throughout the neighborhood.

We’ll have more information on the Garden, soon. Please let us know if you are interested in growing with us by emailing riverroadgarden@gmail.com. Save the date, Saturday morning September 13th, for an organizational meeting.

Announcement: River Road Neighbors mailing list (Google Group)

The River Road Neighbors Google Group (river-road-neighbors@googlegroups.com) is an informal venue for discussion of River Road-related issues. You should have already received an invitation to join the group. Please email me if you did not and would like to join.

Note: Some have expressed concerns about the excess mail they are likely to receive if they join. This need not be the case: you may elect to receive a single email digest, once per day, and then only if there is activity that day. The digest would contain all of the traffic for that day, so even if there are 100 messages, you would still receive only one. Contact me directly if you would like me to enable this option for you.

UPDATE: Another benefit of having Google handle this mailing list is the fact that they will scan and clean any viruses or other potentially malicious programs from the mail before it ever reaches your mailbox.

This service is provided free by Google and is not affiliated with the RRNA.

Best Regards,

Michael Sullivan (sullivan.m@gmail.com)

RRNA Officially Opposes Digital Billboards and the Proposed Electrical Ordinance

Digital Billboard

The following letter will be submitted to the City of San Antonio’s Electrical Supervising Board and City Council Members. Please take the time to go down and voice your concern for the beauty of San Antonio, and River Road. The public hearing on digital billboards will be held at 1901 S. Alamo on Tuesday, September 11th and 9:30 a.m.

UPDATE: “San Antonio’s electrical supervisory board agreed Monday to recommend a city ordinance to regulate the light-emitting diode signs, or LEDs, but suggested capping permits to 10 for the first year and banning their use on older billboards that are exempt from current restrictions.” Read the SAExpress News Article Here. (Or download it a PDF) So the battle isn’t over to protect our views and night sky, but this is a good start!

If you would like to know more about this new form of advertising, check out the Electronic Billboards PDF from Scenic America’s website or review their website at Scenic America.
